Fritir is a virtual museum website telling about the interest in art and culture in Turku at the turn of the 20th century.
Fritir is a cultural history site that focuses on the hobby of art and culture in the early years of the century before independence. It aims to create a nationalistic atmosphere that helped Finland shape itself into an independent nation. The spectrum of culture and art also surprised the creators themselves, after all, many of the cultural hobbies have already existed 150 years ago. The website has a Finnish and a Swedish version.
Black and white photographs restored and colored using artificial intelligence and other image processing techniques form an essential part of the site. Original pictures have been collected from several different museums. One of the most central elements of the site is the city panorama, which attracts the viewer to get to know the cityscape of Turku and its various art and cultural attractions at the turn of the 20th century.
Fritiri has been supported by several different foundations. Digital artist Katriina Ilmaranta is responsible for the overall visual design of the work, Topi Artukka, Ph.D., is responsible for the articles, and Tuomas Piispanen/Webguru, M.Sc., is responsible for the coding.
